Did You Know? – St Mary’s Church, Cheltenham
St Mary’s Church is believed to be the oldest surviving church building in Cheltenham, with parts of the structure dating back to the 12th century
Long before Cheltenham became a spa town, St Mary’s stood at the centre of the original village, serving a small rural community. Over the centuries, the church has been extended and restored, but much of its Norman and medieval character remains.
Today, St Mary’s Church is a reminder of Cheltenham’s origins — a link between the modern town and its much older past.
The Old Standing Cross
In the churchyard of St Mary’s stands the remains of an ancient stone cross, thought to date back to the medieval period.
Crosses like this were often used as meeting points, preaching crosses, or markers connected to early marketplaces. Before Cheltenham developed as a spa town, this area would have been the centre of village life, with the church and cross forming a focal point for the community.
Although only part of the original structure survives today, the standing cross is one of Cheltenham’s oldest visible reminders of its early history.
